The week-long event respectfully pays tribute to all things Elvis in a fun and exciting environment that honors one of the biggest icons in music history.

101 Things To Do In Memphis #60: Graceland

by Melissa Hayes Thompson

Memphians love Elvis! Located at 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard in the vast Whitehaven community, Graceland is a mansion on a 13.8-acre estate that was home to “The King”. Known the world over by his first name, Elvis is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture and his beloved Graceland mansion has become one of the most-visited private homes in America with over 600,000 visitors a year, just behind the White House.

Graceland opened to the public in June 1982 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark. Graceland has 17,552 square feet and has a total of 23 rooms, including eight bedrooms and bathrooms. Currently serving as a museum, headphones narrate the salient events of Elvis’s life and introduce the relics that adorn the rooms and corridors. Celebrate the life of an extraordinary man, emphasizing his generosity, his kindness and good fellowship, how he was at once a poor boy who made good, an extraordinary musical talent, a sinner and substance abuser, and a religious man devoted to the Gospel and its music. Elvis’ Lisa Marie jet and Hound Dog II JetStar planes are on also display and you’ll be able to view many Elvis artifacts, like some of his famous Vegas jumpsuits, awards, gold records, and Elvis' extensive auto collection which includes Elvis' Pink Cadillac. Two new attractions have been added, Private Presley and the `68 Special exhibits.

A pink fieldstone wall surrounding the grounds that was shaped like a book of sheet music, with green colored musical notes and a silhouette of Elvis has several years' worth of graffiti from Memphians and tourists alike, who simply refer to it as "the wall". Don’t forget to bring your sharpie and leave your mark!

Elvis Presley died at the estate on August 16, 1977. Presley, his parents Gladys and Vernon Presley, and his grandmother, are buried there in what is called the Meditation Garden. As a fan favorite at Graceland, there is a special period of time for free-admission walk-up visits to the Meditation Garden. Visitor walk-up times are daily from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. (with some holiday exceptions).

Elvis Presley’s Graceland offers a variety of vacation packages to help you enjoy the Graceland property and Memphis area on a budget. Book a Heartbreak Hotel package today to enjoy a true rock ‘n’ roll pilgrimage. Some of the most popular packages include tickets to additional Memphis attractions as well as restaurant dining credits, Elvis Presley commemoratives and more. Plus, a unique, new hotel is coming, a place that brings you closer to Graceland than ever before. The Guest House at Graceland is scheduled to open in Fall 2016.

Make plans to check out one of the most popular attractions in Memphis! Visit the website for ticket info, events, news, shopping and you’ll also find hotels, dining, and other activities to complete your trip.
