101 Things To Do In Memphis #45: Christmas at Graceland

by Melissa Thompson

Christmas was Elvis’ favorite time of year. Elvis and his family would plan for Christmas with great excitement. Christmas meant home and family and fun.
During the holiday season, the tour of Graceland is extra special with the interior and exterior of the mansion decorated for the holidays. See traditional lights and decorations including hundreds of blue lights along the driveway, a life-size Nativity scene, Santa and his sleigh and much more originally displayed by Elvis. The interior of Graceland mansion is decked out in Christmas decor and includes his traditional red velvet drapes and Presley family Christmas artifacts on display.

Running since November 20 until January 8th, there is still time to join in on the fun. Visit https://www.graceland.com/holidays/ for more info.

101 Things To Do In Memphis #100: Sun Studio

by Melissa Thompson

Legendary Sun Studio is the body around which Memphis music orbits — and where it all began. The most famous recording studio in the world, the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” where the blending of blues and country music exploded in the big bang of rock ‘n’ roll heard around the world is truly a must see for native Memphians and visitors alike. Founder Sam Philips, a self-taught producer, didn’t know the rules, so he broke them all, blending musical styles, cranking up that amp and using lots of echo to create a new kind of music that rocked the world.

Then came a shy teenager with a cheap guitar, a kid with big hair and the unlikely name of Elvis. He had a little fun with a tune called “That’s All Right,” that sounded like no blues song ever before. Add Jerry Lee Lewis, pounding the piano like a madman; Carl Perkins, with his one-of-a-kind rhythm licks; and Johnny Cash, who blended country and pop music like no one ever had. With that group, you have not only a world-shaking musical revolution but also the basis of an award-winning Broadway Show, The Million Dollar Quartet.

As a popular tourist attraction, Sun Studio is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with tours given at the bottom half of every hour from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. Kids 5-11 years are complimentary. Due to the personal nature of the tour performance, children under 5 are not permitted. Adult tour price is only $12 (+tax).

After each days last tour has wrapped, the shrine gets back to its roots as a recording studio. Banks book time, and you may have seen episodes of the Sun Studio Sessions on your public television station: half hour sets for local and national musicians.

Elvis Week officially runs from Saturday, August 8th through Sunday, August 16th. Whether you're visiting Memphis for the week or are a local preparing for the onslaught, here's what you need to know. There are a ton of Elvis Week events including traditional events such as the Elvis Fan Club Presidents Event, Graceland Insiders Event, Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest and an Elvis candlelight vigil plus special concerts, panel discussions, dances and much more.

Join Backbeat Tours for an Elvis tribute tour with a twist! As unique as the man himself, the Hound Dog Tour takes a one-of-a-kind approach to sharing Elvis’ legacy in a high-energy concert and sightseeing tour all rolled into one. Hear all your favorite Elvis hits performed live on Memphis’ only music bus while seeing where he grew up, where he went to school, where he worked, and where he dreamed, as well as sites important to his early career.

The Hard Rock Cafe hosts their annual Ultimate Last Chance Elvis Tribute Artist Contest with live ETA performances. The Auction at Graceland will include artifacts from across the spectrum of collecting, including items owned by Elvis, gifted by Elvis, written by Elvis, used by Elvis and created to promote the king and his career. Each and every lot in this auction has been thoroughly researched and certified by Graceland Authenticated, the authority in Elvis and pop culture authentication.

The cornerstone event of Elvis Week each year is the Candlelight Vigil. The Elvis Candlelight Vigil always begins on the evening of August 15 and lasts well into the morning of August 16, as fans walk up the driveway to Meditation Garden holding a candle in quiet remembrance of Elvis. Candlelight Vigil participants numbering in the tens of thousands gather on Elvis Presley Blvd. during the evening to listen to music, remember Elvis and enjoy the memorials that are created by fans along the street.

After you go to Graceland, there's plenty more Memphis music history to explore. Visit Sun Studios (where Elvis got his big break), Levitt Shell (where he played his first concert), and Lauderdale Courts (where he lived as a teen).
