How about spending a Saturday night with the ladies of Memphis Roller Derby!

If you've been to derby before, you already know what a good time it is. If you haven't, lets start with the basics. The game has a fairly simple premise. Each team fields a single point scoring skater ("Jammer") whose object is to lap as many opposing skaters as they can. At the beginning of each two-minute long jam, a whistle blows. The pack of blockers starts skating forward, jockeying for position. Once they all pass the pivot line, the jammers are released. It's then the jammer's job to work her way through the pack, picking up points for each opposing player that she passes. Meanwhile, her blockers are trying to help her through while at the same time defending the other jammer. The best way to learn about roller derby is to watch roller derby. Come to a bout or two, and you'll get it.

Founded in 2006, the all-female, amateur, flat-track roller derby league currently has four home teams: the PrissKilla Prezleys, the Angels of Death, the Blues City Bombers and the Women of Mass Destruction – and one all-star team, the Memphis Hustlin' Rollers, that represents Memphis regionally and nationally.

MRD's games, which are called bouts, are usually double headers, meaning that you get two games for the price of one. They do sell beer, snacks and merchandise and often times there’s other fun stuff like a photobooth, games or special halftime show, plus the bouts are absolutely family-friendly.

MRD plays once a month at the Pipkin Building – Midsouth Fairgrounds. The next bout is on April 18th. Visit their website or email [email protected] for their full schedule, tickets and more info. Don’t miss the fun or the after party!
