101 Things To Do In Memphis #76: The Bar-B-Q Shop

by Melissa Thompson

The Bar-B-Q Shop, voted #1 ribs in America by the Food Network’s “Top Five Restaurants”, located in the heart of Midtown, less than a mile from the Overton Square Entertainment District, is a local Memphis barbecue eatery that opened in November of 1987. It is a place known for real-pit barbecue with old fashioned barbecue sauces and cole slaw that are made from scratch.

The unique taste of The Bar-B-Q Shop’s gourmet award winning sauces has always been something that has set The Bar-B-Q Shop off from other barbeque restaurants. The recipes for our gourmet sauces have been around for over fifty years.

The Original (mild) Sauce provides a thickness that can be used to baste, marinade, or provide flavoring for your meat of choice.

Our Hot Sauce also provides the same level of thickness but with a little warmth behind it. Our Hot Sauce does an excellent job of providing your meat with a hot flavor without taking away from the barbeque, smokey flavor itself.

The Bar-B-Q Shop’s Dry Seasoning was created later by Frank Vernon in the mid eighties. Our Dry Seasoning is an extraordinary seasoning because it can be used to season anything from chicken breasts, hamburger steaks, salmon or fillet catfish, to even a beef roast. The seasoning can be used with a marinade while prepping your food item, or it can be applied when your food comes out of the oven.

by Melissa Thompson

With sweeping views of the Mississippi River, Twilight Sky Terrace is the premiere nightlife destination in Memphis. After work, sip hand-crafted cocktails in cushy fireside seating, or share delectable bites with friends around the communal table with the dramatic Memphis sunset as your backdrop.

Their version of Memphis nightlife - when the sun goes down, the beat goes on. Soak in the contemporary vibe under the Memphis night sky, sway to custom soundtracks, and enjoy the pop, stir, and pour of the extensive bar offerings from their Memphis rooftop bar.

Twilight Sky Terrace was created to offer Memphians, and guests alike, an entertainment venue alternative that captures a contemporary urban vibe and highlights the innate beauty of the city.

The combination of “Twilight,” the time between daylight and darkness when the sun sets just below the horizon, and “Sky Terrace,” is a fitting description of our Memphis rooftop bar and was inspired by the astounding view seen at twilight from our Memphis rooftop space.

Some of the unique design features of Twilight Sky Terrace include custom sun shades to alleviate the seasonal heat, custom modern furnishings, dancing fire pit, communal table, 70” TV screen, High Spy Binoculars for star gazing, custom crafted cocktail and a delectable menu of small bites.

101 Things To Do In Memphis #62: Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken

by Melissa Thompson

The sign says "world-famous" and it's no exaggeration. Gus' secret recipe of crispy, spicy, juicy fried chicken is served on Styrofoam plates with beans, slaw, and Wonder Bread, of course. Since the 1950s when the first spot opened in Mason, Tennessee, right outside of Memphis, locals and tourists have been lining up alongside one another and waiting patiently for its made-to-order fried chicken. Now you can get it at seven locations in four states, though the unassuming Front St location is the best-known.

101 Things To Do In Memphis #55: The Beauty Shop Restaurant

by Melissa Thompson

“Look Good. Eat Good.” are the words emblazoned on the front windows at the Beauty Shop. This hip and trendy restaurant in the Cooper-Young district of midtown Memphis does both, as it conjures up images of a ‘50s-style beauty shop, formerly Priscilla Presley’s curl-and-dye spot. It’s a camp wonderland where the façade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers.

Nostalgia is served with a sense of humor here. The beauty shop flashback comes complete with original mint green wash basins filling in as sinks behind the hand built bar, made of tiger maple wood. The terrazzo floor is original. Glass brick stalls serve as intimate booths. Mixed with the retro renderings are modern touches such as hand-blown art-glass lights, and glamorous copper and silver-leaf walls.

At this offbeat restaurant, the décor pays homage to the space’s beauty parlor past, while the food offers flavors from around the globe. The Beauty Shop’s fabulous menu is not for the faint of flavor. The cuisine is clean-cut sophistication. The sights, scents and flavors of the Beauty Shop are both bold and quirky, and make for an out of the ordinary dining experience. The menu has a down home American stance with world-beat tints and edges.

The Beauty Shop is yet another labor of love for chef/ restaurateur/ food artist Karen Carrier, who has created a constant buzz in her hometown city with exotic themes and dishes since her return from New York City in 1987.

“I don’t know what words, say, Dr. Johnson or Woodrow Wilson used when they wanted to assert that something was cool and hip, but those are the words we have, so I might as well use them. Beauty Shop is about the coolest, hippest restaurant around. It scream “Memphis,” yet does so with ingenuity and originality; it plays a wacky theme to the limit, but doesn’t stream beyond the pale; it makes you feel good to be there, part of the fun, part of the animated crowd, and leaves you well-fed to boot. What could be cooler that that?”

101 Things To Do In Memphis #53: Sweet Grass Restaurant

by Melissa Thompson

With a seasonal menu and a focus on locally grown produce, the menu is never quite the same each evening at Sweet Grass, but one can always count on an artful combination of Low Country cooking combined with an overall farm-to-table Southern flair, signature cocktails & weekend brunch served in an intimate bistro.

The menu consists of small, medium, and large plates — to suit your large appetite or set up perfectly for sharing. Make sure to order the fried green tomato BLT sandwich, a Southern staple turned into an innovative and memorable treat. But their signature Badass Nachos are something truly delightful and will leave you craving them come every game day. And when it comes time for brunch, head back here for some of the best French toast you’ll ever experience.

The ambiance is upscale casual, making for an elegant meal well within any price range. An airy, open dining room has a small bar area and a very small waiting area, so you can always pop next door to Next Door, also co-owned by Chef Trimm, to wait in comfort for a table if there's no spot available at the bar. Outdoor seating is ready for diners on those warm summer days.

Next Door is the casual sister to Sweet Grass. The perfect place to grab a drink after work, catch the game, or have a Friday night dinner where you don’t need a reservation (in fact, they don’t take them!). Offering a local and craft beer menu and premier bourbon selections.

Reservations are offered, so call ahead to lock down your table. Dining out isn't your only option here — pickup is available, too. Call 901.278.0278 or visit the website for more delicious information!
